Trivia Night
Los Angeles

Spread out, unpredictable, and way more fun than people expect. Where to find pub trivia in LA, which neighborhoods have the best scenes, and what makes this city's trivia culture genuinely its own thing.

Having lived in LA in another lifetime, one thing that always struck me was how spread out the scene is — you can find a solid trivia night anywhere from Pasadena to Downtown to the Westside if you know where to look. That range is both the challenge and the appeal.

Los Angeles gets an unfair reputation as a bad trivia city. The assumption is that nobody reads, everyone's distracted, and the transient culture makes it impossible to build the kind of regular team base that makes pub trivia genuinely competitive. That assumption is wrong — and the people who believe it are missing some excellent Wednesday nights in Silver Lake.

The scene is genuinely spread out, which is the actual challenge. Unlike NYC where you can find a great trivia night within walking distance almost anywhere in Brooklyn, LA requires knowing where to look. Silver Lake, Los Feliz, and Highland Park are your best bets on the east side. Santa Monica and Culver City anchor the west. The neighborhoods in between are hit or miss.

What makes LA trivia genuinely different: film and TV knowledge goes much deeper here than anywhere else. You'll face questions about cinematographers, directors of photography, and obscure supporting characters that would be considered unfair in any other city. In LA, someone in the room probably worked on that project. Lean into it — and make sure your team has at least one film person.

Where to Go

Best LA Neighborhoods for Trivia

LA's trivia scene rewards knowing which neighborhoods to prioritize. Here's where the consistent nights are.

🎨 Silver Lake
The best trivia neighborhood in LA, full stop. Strong regular teams, venues that take their hosting seriously, and a crowd that's competitive without being insufferable about it. Wednesday nights here are the gold standard for east-side LA trivia.
Wed nightsMost consistentRegular teams
🌳 Los Feliz
Right next to Silver Lake and with a similar vibe — creative, well-read, opinionated. Los Feliz trivia nights tend to skew slightly more toward arts and culture than Silver Lake. Good food options nearby if you want to make a full evening of it.
Tue–Wed nightsArts-heavy rounds
🌊 Santa Monica
The strongest option on the Westside. Santa Monica trivia nights draw a mixed crowd — locals, tech workers, and some entertainment industry overflow from adjacent neighborhoods. More accessible for first-timers than Silver Lake, slightly less competitive.
Thu nightsBest for WestsideNewcomer-friendly
🏔️ Highland Park
An emerging trivia scene that's gotten notably better in the last few years. Younger crowd, scrappier competition, and bar prices that are still reasonable by LA standards. Worth checking if you're already in the northeast LA area.
Wed–Thu nightsUp and coming
🎬 Culver City
The proximity to major studios and production companies means Culver City draws genuine film and TV industry people to its trivia nights. If your team is strong on entertainment categories, this is where that knowledge actually matters. Expect those rounds to be hard.

LA-Specific Trivia Night Tips

What's specific to playing pub trivia in Los Angeles that no generic guide covers.

🚗
Plan Your Parking or Rideshare in Advance
This is LA — you already know. If you're driving, check the parking situation before you go, especially in Silver Lake and Los Feliz where street parking gets genuinely difficult on weeknights. If you're drinking, rideshare home; the surge pricing post-trivia is worth it.
🎬
Film Rounds Are Genuinely Hard Here
LA hosts know their audience knows film. Questions go beyond directors and best picture winners — expect questions about cinematographers, production designers, and specific scenes. If your team doesn't have a genuine film person, you'll lose those points consistently.
📱
Check Instagram, Not Just Websites
LA bars are notoriously bad at updating their websites. The most reliable way to confirm a trivia night is still running is to check the bar's Instagram page or story in the 24 hours before you go. A canceled or rescheduled night is a very LA experience you don't need.
🌮
Eat Before or Order Food
LA bar food quality varies wildly. If your venue doesn't do food, eat beforehand — trivia runs 2 hours and hungry teams make bad decisions in the final rounds. There's almost always good food within walking distance in Silver Lake and Los Feliz.
🌡️
Bring a Layer for Patio Venues
Several LA trivia venues run nights on outdoor patios or semi-outdoor spaces. LA evenings get cool even in summer — a layer you didn't need during the day becomes essential by 8pm, especially west of the 405.
🎵
Music Rounds Favor Deep Cuts
LA's music culture is deep and eclectic. Hosts who know their crowd will include music questions that go well beyond chart hits — indie, hip-hop deep cuts, and classic rock B-sides all show up. Spotify playlist knowledge is actually useful prep here.
