World Cup History: Facts & Records

The FIFA World Cup has been played every four years since 1930, when Uruguay hosted and won the inaugural tournament. Twenty-two editions have been completed through Qatar 2022, with 83 nations having appeared in at least one tournament and eight different countries lifting the trophy.

Which Country Has Won the Most World Cups?

Brazil leads the all-time list with five titles — won in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. They are the only nation to have appeared in every World Cup. Germany (including West Germany) and Italy are joint second with four titles each, followed by Argentina with three (1978, 1986, 2022) and France with two (1998, 2018).

All-Time Top Scorers in World Cup History

Miroslav Klose of Germany holds the all-time record with 16 World Cup goals across the 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 tournaments. Ronaldo (Brazil) is second with 15 goals, ahead of Gerd Müller (14) and Just Fontaine (13 — all scored at the 1958 World Cup, still the single-tournament record). Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player to score at five different World Cups.

Most Iconic Moments in World Cup History

The tournament has produced countless unforgettable moments: Pelé's hat-trick against France in the 1958 semi-final at age 17; the "Maracanazo" of 1950 when Uruguay silenced 200,000 fans at the Maracanã; Maradona's Goal of the Century and Hand of God against England in 1986; Germany's 7-1 demolition of Brazil on home soil in 2014; and Mbappé's 2022 final hat-trick against Argentina in the most dramatic final in history.

World Cup Host Nations

Europe has hosted the most World Cups (11 times), followed by South America (5 times). The most recent tournament, Qatar 2022, was the first held in the Middle East. Mexico holds the record for most host appearances — a record they extended further by co-hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside the USA and Canada, making 2026 the first three-nation tournament in history.

Key Records & Firsts

The 1930 World Cup saw American striker Bert Patenaude score the first-ever hat-trick. The 1994 tournament in the USA set an average attendance of 68,991 per game — a record that still stands. The 2022 final between Argentina and France ended 3-3 after extra time, making it the highest-scoring final in history and arguably the greatest game ever played.
